Firm bids for hitman Lafferty
Sunday, 27 January 2008
Rising Northern Ireland star Kyle Lafferty is at the centre of an Old Firm tug of war as the January transfer window prepares to slam shut.
Glasgow giants Rangers and Celtic are both preparing to table bids of around £2 million for the talented 6ft 5ins Burnley striker.
Celtic coach Gordon Strachan made an offer last year for Lafferty but it was turned down by then Burnley boss Steve Cotterill.
But a well-placed source told Sunday Life: “Celtic and Rangers both want to sign Kyle this week."
“Celtic have already enquired about how much Burnley expect for Kyle while Rangers have been forced to wait until they bring some money in before entering the race to bring him to Ibrox.
“Daniel Cousin’s £3 million transfer from Ibrox to Fulham should go through in the next few days, so some of that money will now be offered to Burnley for Kyle.
“Celtic may be in a position to offer Derek Riordan plus cash for Lafferty’s services.”
Lafferty (20), from Kesh in Co Fermanagh, caught the attention of the top SPL clubs with his impressive performances for Northern Ireland in their European Championship campaign.
He has also been a consistent performer for Burnley in the Championship, despite playing the last few months out of position on the left wing.
Burnley boss Owen Coyle would be reluctant to sell his prized asset but an offer of £2million may be enough for the Turf Moor chief to allow Lafferty to leave the Lancashire club.
Lafferty understandably doesn’t want to comment publicly on the speculation but is flattered at the attention he is receiving.
Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington, who has included Lafferty in his squad to face Bulgaria next month, would prefer the striker to continue his education in the Championship rather than head north to Scotland.
That may also happen if Bristol City follow up their interest.
Worthington says: “I would like to see Kyle Lafferty still in the Championship for another year to learn his trade.
“It is a good league to learn in and he is doing very well.
“Obviously if he gets a move to Scotland or the Premier League it will be a good step-up for him but staying where he is in the short term might be good for him.”
