Ice Hockey: Sore heads go to Blazes on Black-eyed Friday night
Sunday, 23 December 2007
A lot of the new boys on the team were asking me about this 'Black-eyed Friday' everyone has been talking about.
I told them to go ask the Coventry Blaze what their take on it was as we followed up last Sunday's 2-0 away success with a 3-2 overtime win at the Odyssey on Friday night!
Its the wildest night of the year supposedly, hence the Black-eyed Friday tag.
I'm sure Coventry woke up Saturday with a sore head wondering where it all went wrong.
Maybe it was last Saturday when their game against Sheffield was cancelled the night before they played us on Sunday.
It wasn't the first time they felt they needed to be fresh against the Giants and this time it really backfired.
After a disappointing loss against Nottingham, we went into Coventry and did the unthinkable, shutting them out and completely dominating the game on their home ice.
We have only won there once or twice before in that last few years, so you can imagine the enormity of the result.
Playing a team in a back to back scenario is perfect if you can win that first game on the road. It puts the other team on the back foot.
Coming home to finish them off was an ideal setting for us. It was a great game to be in and I am sure it was a great game to watch.
Coventry tried every trick in the book to put us off our game because they are afraid of us - now they will have to respect us because we are on our way to the top.
I did the final interview of their annual appearance on the airwaves at ExtremeFM this week and would like to thank them for having me. They are a Craigavon-based community station who come on air for a brief stint this time very year.
And I want to thank a few chaps - Conall, Brian, Conor and Mark - for coming to the game and I am sorry I missed you afterwards.
Finally, I would like to congratulate my fiancee Andrea for making the final six in the Wedding Journal contest for Bride of the Year 2008.
Andrea went in with no expectations and came out a finalist - so if you're not busy and you don't know any of the other contestants, vote for her.
We would really appreciate it and if she wins, you're all invited to the party.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
