Ice Hockey: Giants just warming up
Sunday, 28 October 2007
WITH Halloween around the corner, that brings another month of the season to a close.
I think it's safe to say that things are getting a little bit better for the Belfast Giants.
We had a couple of big changes to our roster and they have proven worthwhile.
Ask any of the guys and they'll tell you we have a new-found confidence.
After a couple of successful games last weekend, we would have liked to keep the momentum going and roll off a few more games but that wasn't in the schedule.
With the injury plague we have had this year I guess the long week of training, rehab and having only one game is a blessing.
Although our play has turned around in the last couple of weeks, we are still very shorthanded with Scott Cameron, Trevor Johnson and Roman Gavallier nursing slow healing injuries.
And with these guys out of the line-up there has been little room for error on the ice. We have had another good week of training, working on the areas that we need to fine tune so that when we get back to a full line up, we will be in a great position to take over the league.
Losing one game does hurt and can affect your confidence. I said a couple of weeks ago after losing to Manchester that it wasn't that big of a loss because we have been playing better hockey although shorthanded.
Now looking back, we have won three out of four in those two weekends, which is a great achievement considering all the player changes and injuries we have had. It's pretty simple; the more games that we can chip away at and win, we can then go for the title. There is still plenty of hockey left and coach Ed Courtenay put it to us to that we need to forget the first 10 games and go for the last 50.
This league is too good for teams to run away with the title. No other team has had the injuries that we have had, if they can go a whole season without injuries, good on them.
Now that the weather is getting a bit colder and the nights darker, ice hockey will be in full swing. The Indian summer was nice, considering the summer we had, but it's not hockey weather.
November is coming, roll on Christmas markets, mulled wine and frosty mornings. And roll on the rest of the league because the Giants are just getting warmed up.
Happy Halloween?
