Don't Take That Odyssey magic away from us

By George Awada

One of the bigger concerns from the fans this year is having some of our home games played out of Dundalk.

I know our general manager, Killer Kelman, has been under a ton of pressure to help the team make money and attract an even larger fan base.

It seems year by year the Odyssey has distanced itself from the Giants. Belfast is becoming a tourist magnet with bands, exhibitions and shows having top priority at the Odyssey.

Even though the Giants have been the main tenants since it was built, now we seem last to get the crucial home dates we need.

It's understandable when certain acts come in and sell out dates in five minutes - the Odyssey would be foolish to tell Take That they have to reschedule because the Belfast Giants are playing Hull Stingrays.

But in saying that, our fans make as much noise and probably drink as much beer as the audiences at any concert that comes to town.

With the Dundonald Ice Bowl out of commission for the last few weeks, we have been training down in Dundalk.

Having our first home game away from home, I really can't think of any complaints other than the fact we came up short again.

I thought the fans who travelled down to support us were great.

The atmosphere was loud and crazy and I'm sure some of the fans, if they could, would have jumped on the ice to try and score for us.

But saying that, I think the fans have created an unbelievable setting for any other games we have to play in Dundalk.

I hear all this talk of building a multi-million pound sport facility out by the Maze.

I sure hope there are plans for an ice rink to be built - not only for the Giants but also for an alternative to the Ice Bowl.

Like the Odyssey, the Ice Bowl has us under the gun for being the only rink we can use.

Luckily Dundalk came along or we would be travelling to Scotland to train and play games.

Rumours or not, I hear there are more rinks to be built in the south.

The financial gains in Dundalk should be evidence enough for Northern Ireland to get in the game and create more recreational facilites, like ice rinks. for everybody.

Finally, I would like to thank sports psychologist Mark Elliot on behalf of all the guys for his time and talking with us about what we need to do to get back on track.

Mental preparation is often overlooked by a lot of athletes and it shows in their performance.

We have had a great week on the ice as well as off the ice. As they say, there's only one place to go from here and that's up.
