Tommy Merton on the Rainy Brothers Honda and Wayne Garrett riding the Motoone in touch KTM share the lead in the Irish Motocross Championship with 57 points each after yesterday's opening rounds at Desertmartin.

In the first MX1 race Merton beat Garrett by 1.3 seconds as an impressive Gary Gibson took third.

In their second encounter Merton led for the first three laps, chased hard by Garrett who inherited the lead on lap four when Merton came off his Honda. Having been gifted the lead, Garrett was not prepared to give it up and beat the remounted Merton by 15 seconds with Richard Bird in third place.

When it came to the MX2 races Garrett did the double, beating Merton and Luke Wilde in the first race and teenager Graeme Irwin and Merton in the second race.
