They're part of a highly skilled acrobatics troupe, delighting audiences with their gravity-defying circus act and nerves of steel.

But when Russian circus performers Alex and Julia Klueva had to dash to Antrim Area Hospital for the arrival of their first baby Anastasia, they were understandably a little bit 'rattled'.

The proud parents, who are graduates of the Moscow State Circus, are part of the unique Equilibrium Troupe high perch act for Circus Chicago.

The couple have performed in circus rings across the globe, but they'll always have special memories of Northern Ireland because their little girl was born here on March 30.

The circus convoy was en route from Larne to Londonderry when 21-year-old Julia went into labour. Family friend Bobby Wilson said: "I was just driving into the circus grounds and Alex was driving out.

"He wanted to know the quickest way to Antrim Area Hospital. He was in a panic and his face was white because Julia's waters had broke!"

Baby Anastasia was named by her grandparents when she was seven days old according to Russian circus tradition.

Bobby, who is promotional manager of Circus Chicago, added: "When Julia found out she was pregnant, she immediately contacted the co-ordinator of the Moscow State Circus for a replacement. We found a girl, Natalie Galiba, who had performed this in the Ukraine and we immediately applied for her work permit."

But Natalie might find herself working with the troupe in the future.

"Alex and Julia would like to have three kids, so we've told Natalie she'll have to remain on standby!" Bobby joked.
