Beauty: Relaxing remedies

IF you've become a slave to the gym or feel washed out and weary, January is the month on the calendar to kick back and recuperate.

While celebrities check into rehabs or luxury spas to take time out, us mere mortals can't all afford the same star treatment. Luckily there's a bevvy of affordable products on the market to soothe weary limbs and relax your mind and body ready for a lively spring. You'll be bouncing back in no time.

Although dark nights and long days at the office can make you feel like you're suffering from a permanent winter hangover, you can ease your woes and relax your body in the bathroom with some chill-out heaven.

"Bathing is back and our bathrooms are becoming a haven of relaxation," says Noella Gabriel of Elemis.

"Dim the lights, introduce some candles, play your favourite piece of music and shed the day by popping on your robe. Run the bath to body temperature and pour in your therapeutic bath product," she recommends.

"While soaking in your relaxing bath practise abdominal breathing. The exhale breath is your cleansing breath and coupled with the aromas of essential oil will boost your relaxation."

TRY: The Body Shop Relaxing Lavender Range (below), from £6-£12; Clarins Relax Bath & Shower Concentrate (left), £14.50; L'Occitane Relaxing Bath Oil, £10 (www.loccitane.com); Sainsbury's Organic You Relaxing Bath Essence, £5; N-Spa Professional De-Stress Bath, £4.95 (www.nirvanaspa.co.uk).

If, after that, you're still having trouble dropping off, try natural aids to promote sleep. Eight hours of solid kip will leave you bright and breezy once that alarm clock buzzes. By the time spring arrives, you'll be fresh as a daisy.

Geraldine Howard, president of Aromatherapy Associates, says: "If you are looking to really switch off and leave the day behind, try something that will help you to wind down like a light, relaxing bath or shower oil.

"Look out for essential oils to lift your spirits and leave you feeling mentally refreshed before bedtime. Lavender will help to ease tense muscles and is great for headaches. I also find it relaxing to light candles to create a comforting and warm ambience."

TRY: Molton Brown Relaxing Yuan Zhi Sleep Mist, £25 (www.moltonbrown.co.uk); Quinessence Tranquilla Mood Enhancer, £5.99 (www.quinessence.com); Holistic Silk Lavender Eye Mask, £32 (www.powderrooms.com); Badger Sleep Balm (left), from £3.99 (01827 280 080).
