Revellers urged to remain vigilant after sex attack

Sunday, 31 December 2006

Young women in a Co Down town have been warned to be vigilant during tonight's New Year's Eve celebrations.

The warning was issued by SDLP MP Eddie McGrady and Sinn Fein councillor Eamonn Mac Con Midhe after the brutal rape of a 20-year-old woman in Downpatrick last weekend.

The woman was walking along Samson Lane, off the Ardglass Road, in the early hours of December 23, when her attacker pounced.

The sex-beast, who is aged about 18 and was wearing a dark hooded top and jeans, subjected the girl to a terrifying ordeal. No one has been arrested for the horrific attack and fears are growing that the rapist, who spoke with a local accent, could strike again.

Although police have made a number of appeals over the attack, no one has come forward with information.

The rape has sent shockwaves through the town and local politicians are warning young women not to walk home on their own.

Said Mr McGrady: "This was a horrific attack and the person who carried out poses a real threat to young women in the town.

"I would urge anyone who may know this person to contact the police immediately. We must get this individual off the street.

"I know a lot of young women will be enjoying themselves, but I would hope that they would stay with their friends and families when making their way home.

"I just hope that this person does not strike again. We must all support the police in ensuring that no other young woman is left traumatised. "

Mr Mac Con Midhe said the attack had caused "great concern" in the town.

He said: "This young woman suffered a terrible ordeal and our thoughts are with her and her family.

"People should remember that this thug is still stalking the streets and I would urge everyone, especially young women, to be careful when they are out enjoying themselves.

"Everybody is talking about the attack and people in the town are genuinely concerned."
