Beauty: Be a green goddess!

By Lisa Haynes
Sunday, 2 September 2007

It's Organic Fortnight so there's no better time to go green with your beauty routine. Sunday Life checks out the best organic and eco-friendly companies and their products

You don't have to be an eco warrior to care about what goes into the products you buy. It's estimated the average woman unknowingly applies more than 200 chemicals via beauty products each day, with the skin soaking in 2kg of chemicals a year, according to research from Neal's Yard Remedies.

It's little wonder more and more women are waking up to the benefits of organic beauty. The health and beauty market is one of the fastest growing sectors of the organic market, growing at 20pc per year. Even Stella McCartney has tapped into the trend with the recent launch of her new luxury organic skincare range, Care.

"Organic beauty is becoming something of a buzz word," says Lula Lewis, founder of organic company LoveLula.com. "Consumers are questioning the quality and providence of everything they are buying."

Organic products have big benefits for beauty junkies too, according to Lula.

"They are 100pc active because they don't use synthetic fillers to bulk out a product," she explains. "Research has shown that organically grown ingredients have higher concentrations of nutrients for your skin to benefit from."

As there's no legal definition of organic beauty products, look out for the Soil Association symbol, indicating the product meets the strictest standards for organic purity and integrity.

Here's where to go to discover the green goddess within you:
