Beauty: Tailored to transform

Sunday, 13 May 2007

Hair hero John Frieda gives his expert advice on taming those tresses.

He may no longer cut hair himself, but the London-born hairdresser is still spot-on when it comes to knowing what women want from a haircare range.

Twenty years ago, he created the legendary Frizz-Ease serum and even now one bottle is sold every 20 seconds and there are 180 other serums on the market trying to compete with its winning formula.

Nicole Kidman is just one of the A-List beauties who credit the magical product with keeping her curls under control.

But it's not just women with curly hair that suffer from frizzy unruly hair, there are many types of frizz, explains the man himself during an interview with Sunday Life.

"The majority of women have some degree of frizz," explained Mr Frieda.

"And it's not always because you've treated your hair badly," he continues. "Genetics, UV and environmental damage can also have an effect, as well as styling products, chemicals and of course, the current passion for hair straighteners.

"There are three types of frizz; fine and flyaway, dry and moderate and lastly, chronically, unruly hair and I've developed a range of products to help control each type, plus I'm relaunching three serums, each designed specifically to control each hair type."

Frieda, mentor to Nicky Clarke and the man behind Joanna Lumley's famous 'Purdey' cut certainly knows his stuff and has specific instructions for people on how to get the best results from his products.

"Frizz-Ease products are designed to smooth the hair cuticle, increase shine and reduce frizz from the inside out and how you apply them is the key to the best results.

"For example, if you have chronic, unruly hair, use the Extra Strength Frizz-Ease serum, but it must be applied when the hair is soaking wet - no towel drying as this roughens the hair cuticle.

"And don't rub it in - pull it through sections of hair from just above the ears down.

"Squeeze hair lightly with a towel before blow-drying section by section, preferably using a diffuser.

"The Original Frizz-Ease serum is perfect for medium frizz and should also be applied to soaking wet hair."

The new kid on the John Frieda block is the Thermal Protection serum, a lighter version of the original, with a thermal shield to protect hair from UV rays and styling stress.

Much lighter than the original, it's perfect for fine, flyaway frizz and unlike the other two serums, can be pulled through gently towel-dried hair or applied to the flyaway ends of dry hair to keep it sleek, smooth and shiny.

A common mistake, explains John is the amount of product that should be used.

"A blob the size of a 50p piece is ample for a full head of medium-length hair," he explains. "If you use too much, you end up with lank hair.

"Another mistake people make is that they pat it on to the top of their heads and smooth it down, resulting in smooth top layers but frizz underneath.

"You'll get much better results if you rub some serum into the palms of your hands and grab a section of hair from just above the top of your ear an pull it down (or comb it if you prefer) to the ends.

"As you dry your hair, it will be distributed evenly."

As well as those famous serums, John has created hair care and styling product to suit every conceivable hair type.

And each and every one is tested on John Frieda customers before going into production and some of the guinea pigs are actually Hollywood celebrities.

"The big stars are the most demanding," reveals John.

"They know that every strand of hair will be scrutinised, so they want products that really work.

"And they come back to us and tell what they liked or what they didn't like about what we used and we will take note of that and alter things.

"The opinions of my customers are equally important," insists John.

"Customer feedback is what makes Frizz-Ease products so successful. The increased use of straightening irons and heat stylers led to the development of the Thermal Protection serum and the Moisture Barrier hairspray (from £2.49).

"It's my mission to make the best haircare products even better."

›Frizz-Ease serums cost £5.99 each and along with the full range of John Frieda haircare and Frizz-Ease products, are on sale at in all major supermarkets and pharmacy chains in the province. For further info log on to www.johnfrieda.com
