Love it or hate it, there's no escape from Valentine's Day. As cosy couples exhibit their love to the world on February 14, singletons will be hoping that they'll be asked out by the object of their affections.

Whether you're hoping to snag a new lover or take things further with the man in your life, prepare to dazzle and seduce on Valentine's night with looks which are guaranteed to get his attention and melt his heart.

Eye'll be yours

"Enhancing the eyes is a quick and effective way to create an alluring look - perfect for when your man is gazing deep into your eyes," says Max Factor make-up artist Ashley Ward.

"Create smoky eyes by outlining the eyes with a kohl pencil, then gently smudging with the finger tip. Blend an eyeshadow into the crease of the eye and sweep out gently, before framing the eyes with a coat of black mascara."

Max Factor's Masterpiece MAX, £9.95, L'Oreal Telescopic, £8.99, and Prestige's Lash Matrix mascara, £5.99, are new mascaras that will show off even the thinnest of lashes to their full potential.

Clumpy lashes can't be batted easily so use Savvylash, £4.99 (www.savvylash.co.uk), after applying mascara to separate lashes safely and hygienically. This handy and inexpensive little tool is loved by MAC's Terry Barber and former Coronation Street star Nikki Sanderson.

Lip service

Cracked lips just don't rate when it comes to romantic clinches.

"It's important to have kissable lips all-year round, but obtaining and keeping that perfect pout to snare your Valentine object of affection isn't easy," says Blistex's Nick Lang.

Intensive lip balms such as Blistex's Lip Splash SPF15, £2.99, Vaseline Sun Protection SPF15, 96p and Superdrug's Little Tins, from 89p, can stop lipstick drying up pouts.

A glossy rich red lipstick will draw attention. Try 17 Shine On Lipstick in Red Hot, £3.99 at Boots, Collection 2000's Colour Extreme lipstick in Sultry, £3.49 from Boots, Asda, Superdrug and chemists, or Prescriptives Colourscope Lipcolour in Classic Red, £14.

Silky skin

Nothing is more of a turn-off than rough scaly skin, especially when you're getting amorous.

"Fight flaky skin by scrubbing regularly, which smoothes lumps and bumps and helps moisturiser sink in faster, and avoiding long, hot, steamy showers," says Marcia Kilgore, founder of Soap & Glory. Soap & amp; Glory's FlakeAway scrub, £5.99 at Boots, and Guinot's Huile Satinee, £35.50 (0800 590 094/0818 719 303), will leave you smelling of strawberries, orange and lemon.

Issey Miyake's new L'Eau d'Issey Moisturising Shower Cream, £21, is a foaming cream that won't dry out your skin.

Luxurious creams like The Body Shop's Pink Grapefruit Body Butter, £12, or Origins' Precipitation Extra, £25 (0800 731 4039/ www.origins.co.uk), will lock in moisture for soft, touchable skin.
